Why Judging is Good not Bad: Critical Thinking and the Role of the Parent

by

Elena Neitlich

Recently some mothers of young children engaged in a discussion about passing judgment. It was unanimous; they would all teach their children that being judgmental of other people is wrong. They would be sure not to model judgmental behavior and they would correct their children if they caught them being judgmental. Sounds good in theory

but, shouldnt children be taught and encouraged to be judgmental?

This article is not advocating teaching children to be judgmental of people based on skin color, physical ability, religion, intellectual, or economic differences, of course. It is about teaching children about values and behavior and assessing situations.

judgment Pronunciation[juhj-muh nt]

noun

1.an act or instance of judging.

2.the ability to judge, make a decision, or form an opinion objectively, authoritatively, and wisely, esp. in matters affecting action; good sense; discretion: a man of sound judgment.

According to the dictionary definition of the word judgment (above), the word embraces one of the most important concepts that parents need teach their children: critical thinking.

Critical thinking consists of mentally evaluating information, analyzing that information and forming a judgment which leads to smart action. A good example of using critical thinking is when a driver applies the brakes when speeding towards the edge of a cliff. The driver notes the cliff edge ahead, gauges his speed and using good sense, slows the vehicle down avoiding disaster.

Critical thinking and making judgments allow children to self-regulate their social, emotional, and physical responses to outside stimuli and stay in control. If a child is put into a situation in which he must choose between good and bad, he can make an assessment of the situation, and using the skills he has been taught by his parents, make a good choice. Children can be taught to think a few steps ahead, envision the consequences of their actions, and make appropriate choices based on the values and morals taught by their parents. Parents can take a proactive role in teaching critical thinking by discussing topics that children will most likely encounter as they develop; such as peer pressure, failure in sports, stress due to grades, managing spending and handling relationships. Role playing can be a great tool in preparing kids in advance for likely situations. Parents can use their wisdom to coach their children about how to respond in certain instances.

Parents should not assume that their children understand how to think critically and judge situations. Childrens brains do not fully develop until well into their teenage years (or beyond). Because of this they are often unable to make certain connections. In addition, due to their immaturity they do not have the capacity to understand the impact of their decisions. A sixteen year old boy who is adept at video games may jump into a high performance car and within moments slam it into a tree, not understanding that he doesnt really know how to control the car even though he has been driving the same car on the screen for years (unfortunately, a true story).

Over the course of the past twenty years, with the introduction of the internet, society has become information driven. With all of the benefits that technology has given, it has also exposed people to loads of false content. This is very difficult for children to understand because they see the world more concretely than adults and have little reason not to believe all of what they see and hear. For example they are easily duped by pedophiles posing as thirteen year old children on social networking sites. They believe rumors and spread them like wildfire about any individual or situation. Now more than ever, learning and using critical thinking and passing judgment is crucial, especially for children who are not old enough to understand the dire consequences of poor decision making.

Not passing judgment turns good and bad into moral equivalents. The distinction between the two states is removed and suddenly there is no line to cross; everything is acceptable.

It has become politically incorrect to distinguish between good behavior and bad behavior. Parents feel hesitant about saying no and disciplining. However, not drawing a line between appropriate and inappropriate does a great disservice to children. Teaching children to choose friends wisely is a difficult but essential lesson parents must be willing to teach their kids. Using discretion when choosing friends and picking friends with good character and high moral fiber, can keep kids on the right path and headed towards achieving their goal and dreams.

If parents want to instill good values, ethics and morals in their children, they need to have the courage to go against the social tide and teach their children how to judge and make choices based on the morals and values that they have been raised with. Perhaps most difficult, this includes making judgments about the right kinds of people to associate ones self with, in order to surround oneself with strong influences and people with common, strong values. Teaching children to think critically and judge their circumstances gives kids a leg up in a world that is barraging them with information and temptations, some good and some not so good.

Illegal drug found to be used in the manufacture of toys
Sep 06

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Bindeez beads, a children’s toy from Australia and manufactured by Moose Enterprise in Hong Kong, is being pulled off toy store shelves in the United Kingdom after traces of an illegal drug, which is converted into gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) when ingested, was found inside the toy. At least 20 million toys are affected.

So far at least three children from the U.K. and at least two from Auckland, New Zealand have fallen seriously ill and are currently receiving medical attention. The toy is also sold in the United States as Aqua Dots, with two reports received by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of children needing hospitalization after ingesting the beads.

“We’ve asked all our customers to take them off the shelf while we retest everything to make sure the toys comply with all regulations,” said the company in a statement, although no mandatory recall has been issued for the product. The statement also says that the plant in Hong Kong was not using a chemical mixture approved by the company.

“This substitution was not at any time approved by Moose nor was Moose made aware of any substitution by the supplier,” added the statement.

The toys were supposed to contain a non-toxic chemical known as 1,5-pentanediol, but instead 1,4-butanediol, which is mainly used in creating the illegal drug GHB, was used in the toys. When humans consume 1,4-butanediol, the body converts it into GHB and could make the individual seriously ill, causing headaches, seizures, dizziness and in some cases death. GHB is a natural chemical found in a variety of things such as beef, wine and some varieties of citrus fruits. It is also used as a pharmaceutical which is sold as Xyrem.

Recent animal research indicates that drugs are available for human use which may work as antidotes to the poison, either by hindering its conversion to GHB with 4-methylpyrazole (fomepizole, Antizol) or by blocking GHB’s effectiveness at the receptor (SCH 50911). Rodent testing has found the lethal dose of 1,4-butanediol to range from 1.4 to 2.5 grams per kilogram body weight, but an antidote can increase the lethal dose by a factor of 10.

It is not known how the chemicals got mixed up, but officials for the toy company say that they are continuing the investigation. The toy is currently banned in all of Australia, but the company says all those who bought it will be refunded their money.

“The issue of how a dangerous substance was used in these beads and not the non-toxic substance … that is going to take us a few more days to uncover,” said Australia’s Fair Trade Minister, Linda Burney in a statement to the press.

The toy was recently named Australia’s number one toy for 2007.

NASCAR: Edwards wins 2010 Kobalt Tools 500
Aug 19

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards, who qualified on the pole position, won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 2010 Kobalt Tools 500 held on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, United States. This became his first Sprint Cup win of the season. Throughout the course of the race there were five cautions and fourteen lead changes among five different drivers.

With 47 laps remaining in the 312 lap race, Denny Hamlin was first, but Edwards passed him one lap later. Edwards maintained the lead to win the race, while Hamlin made a pit stop because of a possible shortage of fuel. Ryan Newman took second, ahead of Logano in third. Greg Biffle managed the fourth position, after starting fourth on the grid. Jimmie Johnson, from the Hendrick Motorsports team, clinched the fifth position, after leading none of the laps during the race. Kevin Harvick followed Johnson in sixth, while Matt Kenseth could only manage seventh.

Mark Martin, Kurt Busch, and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top ten finishers in the race. Hamlin, the current Drivers’ championship leader, led 190 laps and finished twelfth. Following the race, Hamlin commented, “It’s pretty disappointing. We were in a good position there heading into next week. We just have to outrace them next week. We had a good car today and it didn’t work out strategy wise. We did what we had to do today we just didn’t have it at the end. It’s frustrating. We had a car that could win and that is something we’ve never had here. We’ll just go there next week and try to win the race. I don’t know if we were trying to be smart or conservative there are really short.” “I was sitting pretty,” Hamlin continued. “I have to leave Phoenix in Phoenix. I can’t control it. I did everything I could do today and it didn’t work out. It could have been a lot worse. We could have lost the points lead and we didn’t. We’ve had the best car in this Chase and might not win it. The full-court press will be on next week.”

Going into the final race of the season, Hamlin remained the Drivers’ championship leader with 6462 points, fifteen points ahead of Johnson in second, and 46 ahead of Harvick in third. This is the closest that the championship has been since the Chase format was introduced. The Manufacturers’ ?hampionship standings are led by Chevrolet with 255, 42 points ahead of Toyota and 88 ahead of Ford. Johnson commented, “We had to work whatever magic we could at the end and now we have a points race heading to Miami. I know what my mindset is. I hope the pressure of being on Denny’s heels wears on him this week. One race winner take all, it’s going to be a hell of a show.”

Nokia takes over Symbian OS development
Aug 19

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

On Monday, Symbian Foundation discontinued Symbian OS, as a result of its lost popularity since Android came to market. The Finnish telecommunications company Nokia, being one of the few hardware manufacturers who use the system on some of the models, announced that it has taken over the operating system’s development.

Nokia had acquired Symbian Foundation in 2008. Now, the foundation refused to continue the project, because this smartphone operating system had lost its popularity when Android came to market. During the next several months, most Symbian Foundation employees, who were completely governing the project previously, will retire. By April 2011, only the licensing team will stay to oversee the project.

The executive director of the Symbian Foundation Tim Holbrow explained the change, saying that “There has since been a seismic change in the mobile market but also more generally in the economy, which has led to a change in focus for some of our funding board members. The result of this is that the current governance structure for the Symbian platform — the foundation — is no longer appropriate.”

Instead, Nokia takes over the development of the system. This is possible because the Symbian OS is currently open source and freely redistributable. In an interview with ZDNet, the head of Nokia smartphone business Jo Harlow said that the takeover was in significant part because Nokia hardware was the major one using the OS. The development environment would be switched to Qt framework for the system to support cross-platform applications use and development. It is unclear whether the licensing of the future releases of the system would remain open-source.

How To Properly Use Oil Spill Equipment} Aug 16

How to Properly Use Oil Spill Equipment

by

Travis Zdrazil

Oil spill equipment is actually a spill kit that has the necessary things you needed in cleaning up a mess. Oil spill equipment tends to have sorbents that generally relies on the chemical or liquid to be absorbed. To actually use it will be easy to say but handling the situation when it goes wrong can be messy. So its important to know how to use sorbents and to make sure that the oil spill equipment that you brought wont go to waste.

YouTube Preview Image

To simplify, using the oil spill equipment or more accurate, the sorbents in the kit, you must know the liquid to be absorbed. If the liquid may contain hydrocarbons like oil, jet fuel, gasoline, motor oil, etc, you must use the absorbent that tends to suck only hydrocarbons, especially if the said liquid is on the water itself. There are different kinds of kits for every liquid and classified into three: universal or general purpose kits, oil only kits and the hazmat kits. Universal or general purpose spill kits tend to absorb both liquid whether it is oil or water. Oil only spill kits are the ones that can be used in water and absorb the oil that lay waste above it, while repelling water itself. Hazmat spill kits are the ones that can be used in water based liquids and even strong ones like acid and solvents.

The oil spill equipment also has the necessary things that you might need for protection like gloves, goggles, disposable bag and the likes. Protection is necessary when cleaning something that may harm you or your health. Drum spill kits are the containers that you use to contain the chemicals or spill that you cleaned. These containers can come in different forms, the large type and the movable type. Large ones are used when there is a massive spill whether it will on a ship or the chemical plants, these containers are essential. To use them is a bit risky and you need to get all the necessary gear of protection before containing a chemical or anything into these containers. The movable ones are used mainly by the janitors that clean the offices or by the service crew that cleans up the floor as people tend to walk on it with wet or muddy shoes. Then there is also a battery acid spill kit and a mercury spill kit that can be very handy when everything gets all leaky. To use the battery acid spill kits, it must be placed where the battery is near and in case it leaks, follow the guidelines that usually are at the back of the product itself. For mercury spill kits, which is very essential to lab and other industrial facilities, should be used under the dealers guidance and be very, very careful if handling it by your own.

The oil spill equipment may sound quite easy but to take all the technicalities can be a headache, but for the assurance of the safety of the people buying it is some of the companys concern and to diligently following those directions can be a well enough guideline to use such equipment.
